Moog unveils Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform turret

Moog Incorporated’s Space and Defense Group introduced its new Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform (RIwP) at a live fire demonstration at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama last week alongside the company’s defense-industry partner, DRS Technologies.

The RIwP is a turret that installs easily onto most current and planned U.S. and allied land, sea and air platforms. It also provides tailored overmatch for various combat profiles. It is engineered with advanced features such as high-performance target acquisition technology and unmatched pointing/stabilization accuracy.

The turret is designed to ensure U.S. and Allied forces see enemies first, engage first and achieve mission success. The RIwP offers a reconfigurable range of platform weapon systems that operate together. It’s also engineered to allow the warfighter to reload under armored protection.

"Our goal was to design an innovative, game-changing platform, which meets both current and future warfighter needs," Tony Peck, Business Unit Director for Moog Defense Control Systems, said.

During the demonstration, the RIwP fired multiple rounds from an M2 .50 caliber machine gun, grenades from a Mk19 40mm launcher and Javelin missiles. All of the weapons successfully hit their targets.

The RIwP’s under-armor reload and reconfiguration capabilities were also demonstrated. All of the turret’s configurations allow for the various types of ordnance to stay under fully-armored protection, which reduces the chance for ammunition damage by debris or small arms fire.

The RIwP accommodates more than 100 weapon configurations including direct fire, missiles and non-lethal deterrents as well as an advanced sensor package.
