BAE Systems awarded $193 million Navy contract to install combat systems on two guided-missile destroyers

BAE Systems was awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract from the U.S. Navy worth up to $193 million for post-construction work on the USS Zumwalt and the USS Michael Monsoor.

The contract is for the installation and completion of the guided missile destroyers’ combat systems and for hull, mechanical and electrical enhancements. The company’s weapon systems business will also service the ships’ gun systems and install their Mk 57 vertical launch systems.

The Zumwalt and Micael Monssor are the Navy’s first ships in a new class of surface combatants. The Zumwalt was commissioned in Baltimore in October and the Michael Monssor is still under construction in Bath, Maine; both will be homeported in San Diego. The ships are 610 feet long with steel hulls and composite structure deckhouses.

“We’re pleased with the opportunity to help prepare the Zumwalt and Michael Monsoor for initial service in the fleet,” BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair Vice President and General Manager Bob Koerber said. “We look forward to working with industry partners to install the state-of-the-art combat systems aboard these leading edge combatants and to finish other hull and engineering enhancements following their construction and delivery.”
