VA resumes streamlined caregiver support operations

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently reinstated its Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers to better serve constituents following a hiatus in effect since April 17 and a review to ascertain improvement strategies.

Over the past three months, the VA examined internal procedures and emerged with an assessment recommending clearer communication, streamlined processes and better training, according to an announcement. Results included new guidelines for defining staff responsibility, eligibility requirements for veterans and caregivers, benefits and revocation procedures.

“VA has taken immediate steps to improve the program’s operations,” VA Secretary Dr. David Shulkin said in the announcement. “Our top focus during the review has been to listen, evaluate and act swiftly to make changes that will better meet the needs of our Veterans and caregivers. This does not mean our work is done. We will continue to refine and improve this important program.”

Communication enhancements recommended include clarification of assistance needs for families, caregivers and survivors. Additionally, the resource website for caregivers was redesigned for better navigation. It now contains a system for connecting caregivers and veterans to home- and community-based services via the VA’s Geriatrics and Extended Care programs.
