Lockheed Martin awarded $26 million to supply Navy with laser guided training rounds

The U.S. Navy recently awarded Lockheed Martin a $26.5 million contract to deliver Enhanced Laser Guided Training Rounds (ELGTR) and refurbish shipping containers.

ELGTR gives personnel the opportunity to train for difficult assignments, a Lockheed Martin release said. Lockheed Martin will commence shipping through late 2019 under the primary agreement; with renewal options, the partnership can last into 2023.

The company has already produced over 160,000 such units for the U.S. military, including the Marine Corps and Navy as well as clients worldwide.

"ELGTR provides the training capabilities the U.S. Navy requires to be prepared for challenging tactical mission environments," Jason Golden, ELGTR program manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, said in the release. "The entire tactical team, from weapon handlers to ground support personnel to aircrew, benefits from executing end-to-end training procedures."

The ELGTR is compatible with existing crafts including the F-16, F/A-18 and AV-8B, authorities said. Under the contract, Lockheed will also refurbish shipping containers that can be repurposed.
