HHS Ignite Accelerator poised for seventh season of innovation in problem solving

Blending entrepreneurial innovation with conventional wisdom, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services internal innovation incubator, HHS Ignite Accelerator, recently announced its seventh season of sponsored activity.

HHS Ignite Accelerator works with department staffers who wish to improve operations through innovative problem-solving, an HHS release said. Small teams obtain coaching and technical advice in an entrepreneurial structure to “incubate” ideas.

“This program affords the best stewardship of U.S. taxpayer dollars by testing and validating before fully deploying otherwise costly, unnecessary solutions,” HHS  Chief Technology Officer Bruce Greenstein said in the release.

Established in 2013, the program has run six rounds to date. 2017 represents its seventh cohort, with 14 teams chosen from an original pool of 80 applications by a panel of 18 judges and poised to begin a three-day “boot camp” at HHS headquarters.

“The next cohort of Ignite teams are innovative teams hoping to address a number of critical challenges, many of which were defined during the focal ‘Reimagine HHS’ workshops,” HHS Ignite Co-director Kevin McTigue said in the release.

Selected applicants gain latitude for experimentation; immerse themselves in experiential management and problem solving; receive customized coaching and mentoring, and enjoy access to HHS’ internal community of leaders and innovators, the release said.
