EPA proposes cleanup plan for Allied Paper Landfill in Michigan

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently proposed a cleanup plan for the Allied Paper Landfill in Kalamazoo, Michigan, part of the Allied Paper/Portage Creek/Kalamazoo River Superfund site.

The plan would consolidate and cap materials that contain contaminants, such as PCBs;  install a groundwater-monitoring network; and provide for the future reuse and redevelopment of some areas of the site.

The agency will issue a final plan after reviewing public comments, which can be submitted by mail, online or at public hearings throughout the comment period, which will run from Wednesday to Dec. 1. The plan can be accessed at www.epa.gov/region5/cleanup/alliedpaper/index.html.

The public hearings will be held in Kalamazoo on Oct. 15 at the Washington Writers’ Academy and on Oct. 22 at the St. Joseph Parish Gymnasium, both from 6 p.m. CDT.
