BWXT wins contract to build nuclear reactors for Navy vessels

BWX Technologies Inc., a naval nuclear reactor manufacturer, won contracts worth approximately $34.5 million from the U.S. Naval Reactors Program Sept. 28.

The contracts go to BWXT Nuclear Operations Group, Inc., a subsidiary of BWX Technologies, for the manufacturing of nuclear reactors used in U.S. Navy submarines and aircraft carriers.

BWXT has been manufacturing naval nuclear components and reactors since the 1950s. They are also responsible for the design and fabrication of components for the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine.

Today, BWXT reactors power the Navy’s Ohio, Virginia, Seawolf and Los Angeles class submarines as well as the Nimitz and Ford class aircraft carriers.

"We are very pleased to receive these contract awards and add to our backlog of work,” BWXT’s CEO Peyton S. Bater told American Security News. “We continue to stay focused on operating safely and delivering the quality products that our customer demands."

Work on the contracts is already underway at BWXT’s locations in Virginia, Ohio and Indiana. The remaining work is slated to take two years.
