Two of North America’s largest commercial solar energy storage facilities are set to open near Chicago thanks to the efforts of Renewable Energy Systems Americas Inc. (RES) of Broomfield, Colorado.
The company is a leading source of wind, solar, and renewable energy storage facilities in the United States. RES is in the process of completing of the Jake Energy Storage Center and Elwood Energy Storage Center in Illinois, two grid-scale energy storage projects.
The RES projects will be fully commercially operable as stand-alone battery storage facilities. They will allow RES to store the energy produced through renewable infrastructure, which will assure more stable supply for the grid.
The Jake Energy Storage Center is located in Joliet, Illinois, and the Elwood Energy Storage Center is located in West Chicago. Each of the new energy storage systems developed by RES have an operating capacity of more than 39 megawatts (MW).
"The Jake and Elwood projects represent the cutting edge in commercial energy storage development," Glen Davis, RES CEO, said. "These projects will work to ensure high-quality and reliable power to the local communities and across the region while fitting seamlessly into the local community and grid."
The projects are connected to the electrical grid of the major regional utility provider Commonwealth Edison Company.
