U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz recently announced the allocation of $125 million to 41 clean-energy technology projects.

The funds were awarded by the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). The projects applied for the grants through ARPA-E’s OPEN 2015 program.

Moniz made the announcement during an event at 1776, a Washington D.C.-based technology-business incubator. In his remarks, Moniz focused on the importance of leveraging top U.S. sustainability innovators.

ARPA-E funds the most innovative technology projects that display technical and commercial potential. Those funds act as startup money for research that’s in its early stages, when it's difficult to attract private-sector investors.

“The ARPA-E projects selected highlight how American ingenuity can spur innovation and generate a wide range of technology options to address our nation’s most pressing energy issues,” Moniz said. “The energy technologies the Department of Energy invests in today will provide the solutions needed to combat climate change and develop a global low-carbon economy in the future.”

The 41 projects that received funding cover key areas including transportation, energy efficiency, and electricity generation and delivery systems. The winning proposals came from 21 states.
