Southern Co. innovation honored by R&D Magazine

The Southern Co. was recently honored by R&D Magazine as part of its 2015 R&D 100 Awards.

The company earned an R&D 100 Award in the process/protyping category for developing the KM-CDRTM process, a 25-megwatt carbon capture and storage demonstration at Alabama Power's Plant Barry. The project was also a finalist in the mechanical devices/material category.

In addition, the project received a gold award for corporate social responsibility.

"These awards recognize the significant technological innovation made by Southern Co. to create better ways to deliver clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to customers using America's energy resources," Chief Environmental Officer Larry Monroe said. "We believe this technology will prove beneficial as the industry seeks to develop new ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in cost-efficient ways."

Southern Co.’s new process can recover up to 90 percent of carbon dioxide released during fossil fuel use at electric-generation facilities.
