The U.S. Senate teamed up with the American Petroleum Institute (API) to help veterans and current military members find jobs in the oil and gas industry, the API said this week.

API and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), a member of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, have launched the Veterans Energy Pipeline website, a hub for armed forces members and vets to explore job opportunities in the energy realm.

The initiative aims to pave a smoother transitional road back to civilian life while providing a highly trained and dedicated workforce to U.S. energy infrastructure.

“Our goal is to build on the successes of America’s energy revolution and help those serving our country, as well as veterans, transition into well-paying careers in the oil and gas industry,” API President and CEO Jack Gerard said. “This unique forum will provide important information about the industry, the outlook for job opportunities, and useful job-hunting tools and resources.”

A recent study by IHS Global found that over 950,000 U.S. job opportunities could be created by 2020 and nearly 1.3 million by 2030 in the oil and natural gas industry. Those opportunities will be a boon to veterans seeking new jobs as they leave the military.

“In the next decade or so, approximately half of the industry’s current technical personnel will retire,” Gerard said. “Replacing these jobs and filling anticipated new ones will be critical to maintaining our nation’s position as a global energy leader.”
