The U.S. Senate confirmed former Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. John Estrada as the new ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago late last week.

President Obama nominated Estrada after the previous ambassador, Beatrice Welters, resigned the post in 2012.

Estrada, a Trinidad and Tobago native, served in the Marine Corps for 34 years, retiring in 2007. Estrada then worked for engineering firm Coalescent Technology Corp. as a business-development specialist for a year. In 2008, Estrada was named senior manager for Lockheed Martin Training Solutions.

Estrada also is a member of the American Battle Monuments Commission and has served on the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, the national board of directors for Operation Homefront, and the executive committee for the United Services Organization (USO).
