U.S. Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) voted with the rest of the chamber to pass legislation unanimously that tightens sanctions on North Korea in the wake of its January underground nuclear bomb test and a more recent missile launch into orbit.

The North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act of 2016, approved by a vote of 96-0, was co-sponsored by Daines and requires the Obama administration to look into what is permissible in terms of economic and other sanctions to pressure North Korea into cooperating with the international community on military restrictions, as well as human rights and cyber attacks.

"We can’t sit by idly and allow a dangerous regime to conduct ballistic missile tests without repercussions," Daines said. "This legislation is crucial to not only strengthening sanctions, but outlining a comprehensive strategy to combat North Korea’s criminal cyber activities and horrific human-rights violations. We must continue to confront the extremist regimes that threaten our global security, troops and allies in the region and that violate innate human rights.”

The bill now goes to the president's desk, as the House already passed its version of the bill recently.
