In a letter to Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the 1st Vice Commander and legislative chair of the Cesar E. Chavez Sacramento Chapter of the American G.I. Forum of California announced his organization’s support for S. 357, the Furthering Asbestos Claims Transparency (FACT) Act.
“We believe S. 357 will help protect veterans and others by curbing fraud and preserving bankruptcy asbestos trust resources for future veterans’ claims,” wrote Frederick A. Romero. “Preserving the trusts helps protect veterans who have developed asbestos-related injuries yet not yet filed claims.”
The American G.I. Forum is a congressionally chartered Hispanic veterans and civil rights organization founded in 1948.
Romero’s letter also was sent to U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) and ranking committee member Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT).
“We believe that enacting asbestos trust transparency legislation will discourage ‘double-dipping’ and help preserve financial resources for military veterans and others,” added Romero.
S. 357 awaits further action in the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, following a hearing last month in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
