A recent Virginia Petroleum Council (VPC) poll of residents found that 65 percent of the state's voters approve of the U.S. developing oil and natural gas offshore.
The poll, conducted by Harris Poll, encompassed 85 percent of Republicans, 60 percent of Independents and 56 percent of Democrats a solid representation of the upcoming elections.
"A strong bipartisan majority of voters in Virginia continue to support producing more domestic energy and creating more jobs in the state," VPC Executive Director Miles Morin said. “Cutting-edge technologies and a core value of safety have helped make the U.S. the No. 1 producer of oil and natural gas in the world while protecting the environment and creating jobs in Virginia.”
The statewise telephone poll of 630 registered voters also reported that 88 percent of those who participated in the poll said more U.S. oil and natural gas production would produce more jobs, and 83 percent said developing more oil and natural gas domestically would cut energy costs for U.S. consumers.
In addition, 79 percent of participants said more U.S. oil and natural gas production would boost federal and state coffers through lease payments, royalty fees and other sources of revenue, easing pressure on state budgets.
