Pipeline safety agency proposes new maintenance mandates

The U.S. and other nations rely on natural gas, from heating homes to cooking meals, for survival.

What many do not know is that this fossil fuel relies on a network of over 2 million miles of gas pipelines to move this gas to populated areas.

These gas lines transport the fossil fuel in mass quantities at high pressures to regional consumption locations, then distributes the natural gas to homes nationwide.

In response to booming natural gas development, the strain being put on pipelines and recent accidental pipeline explosions, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Security Administration (PHMSA) has introduced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, which details how the PHMSA plans to keep natural gas employees and users safe, such as mandating more inspections and maintenance requirements for pipelines.
