Several mines and mining employees in Colorado received awards for safety from the Colorado Mining Association (CMA) and the State of Colorado at the 118th National Western Mining Conference and Exhibition this week in Denver.

Western Fuels-Colorado LLC won a handful of awards, including four safety innovation awards and two awards for their surface-mine safety. Western Fuels' New Horizon Mine has not had a lost time accident since September 2010, and the Colowyo Mine won awards for large-surface mine safety and safety innovations.

Two other mines that received awards were Mountain Coal Company LLC's West Elk Mine, with the fewest amount of safety-related incidents during underground mining work in the past four years, and the Newmont Mining Corp.'s Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company, which won honorable mention for their new Safety Suggestion Program.

Beyond companies, Steve Kelso and Steve Schake of Climax Mine and Tom Welsh of Henderson Mine received awards for working over 30 years without injury. CMA President Stuart Sanderson commended all award winners for their safety accomplishments.
