Navy veteran, 10-year Connecticut state trooper promoted to sergeant

Connecticut State Trooper John Miller,
a 22-year Navy veteran and a University of Phoenix graduate, was promoted to sergeant at a ceremony late last week.

Miller was formally promoted at the State Police Training Academy in Meriden by Dora Schriro, commissioner of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, along with 25 other troopers. Gov. Dannel Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman were also present and addressed the promoted troopers.

Miller will serve at Troop E in Montville after serving for 10 years at Troop C in Tolland. Miller also has served as a resident trooper in Mansfield. Resident troopers serve in towns that do not have a police department or that have opted to have the State Police supervise their officers. A resident trooper is stationed in the town and works in conjunction with troopers from the nearest Troop. During his service as a trooper, Miller received one unit citation and was recognized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

Miller earned an associate's degree from the University of Phoenix, which offers a number of criminal justice degrees and certificate programs. The online classes give busy people the opportunity to earn a degree in their profession. While the State Police only requires a high school diploma and successful graduation from the academy for hiring, troopers are encouraged to pursue higher education.
