DoD unveils 2016 Secretary of Defense Environmental Award winners

The Department of Defense (DoD) honored nine individuals, teams and installations with this year's Secretary of Defense Environmental Awards, which honor environmental achievements and innovative and cost-effective environmental practices, the DoD said late last week.

"Our men and women work hard to keep environmental stewardship a top priority while simultaneously advancing our national defense mission," Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Frank Kendall said. "(These efforts) foster a special type of innovation worthy of national recognition."

The DOD reviewed 30 nominations to select the nine winners.

The Camp Dawson Army Training Site, part of the West Virginia National Guard, won the Natural Resources Conservation category for a small installation.

The Fort McCoy Natural Resources Branch in Wisconsin won the Natural Resources Conservation category for an Individual/Team.

In the Environmental Quality category, the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms in California won the non-industrial installation category

The Eglin Air Force Base Environmental Quality Team in Florida won the Environmental Quality category as an Individual/Team.

Beale Air Force Base in California won the Environmental Restoration category for an installation.

The Vieques Environmental Restoration Program team in Puerto Rico won the Environmental Restoration Award for the individual/team category.

Florida’s Marine Corps Support Facility on Blount Island, Florida, won the Sustainability Award in the industrial installation category.

New Mexico’s White Sands Missile Range won the Cultural Resources Management Award for a large installation.

The Environment, Safety and Occupational Health Team at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio won the Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition in the large-program category for its KC-46 Program.
