Lockheed Martin recently signed a real estate contract with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) that entails Georgia Tech purchasing four buildings and 52 acres on Lockheed Martin’s Marietta, Georgia, campus.
“Lockheed Martin and Georgia Tech have worked together in numerous areas over the years,” Georgia Tech President G.P. “Bud” Peterson said. “This is another area in which our collaboration will prove to be mutually beneficial as we both look to serve our nation with our respective capabilities.”
The buildings and acreage were formerly used by Lockheed Martin for the testing and operation of its F-22 Raptor program, but are currently vacant following the cessation of F-22 production in 2013. The facilities will add to five buildings that the Georgia Tech Research Institute already holds in Cobb County, which are currently not adequate for the research enterprise’s needs. As Georgia Tech uses these facilities to further expand its research and educational programs, they could provide space for the creation of up to 500 jobs within the county.
“This is great news for Cobb County,” Cobb County Commission Chairman Tim Lee said. “Both Lockheed Martin and the Georgia Tech Research Institute are great community partners, and this purchase strengthens our reputation as a center for research, development and high-tech jobs.”
