British Petroleum recently launched new products
used in polyester production that contain low-carbon and carbon-neutral purified terephthalic acid (PTA), called PTAir.
These new products offer consumers a chance to reduce their carbon footprints with an easily
substituted product.
“Our exciting new
PTAir product offer is an important steppingstone toward a more
sustainable polyester chain,” BP Aromatics CEO Luis Sierra said. “PTAir is
available today in large quantities and seamlessly fits into the current supply
chain as a ‘drop in’ substitute for higher carbon, conventional PTA. Moreover,
it allows our customers to economically achieve a meaningful carbon-footprint
reduction using a raw material whose eco-profile has been independently
measured and verified by respected environmental consultants.”
PTAir has a global
warming potential 29 percent lower than the average European PTA production,
and BP is also offering PTAir Neutral Products, which mitigates associated CO2-equivalent emissions through investment in carbon projects. Through PTAir
Neutral, customers also have the option of offsetting their full product
footprint through BP’s carbon-management program.
“Retailers and brand
owners are seeking more environmentally friendly solutions that will help
reduce the carbon impact of their products and are choosing brands that reflect
their concerns for the environment,” BP Petrochemicals Chief Operating Officer Rita Griffin said. “Through
the new BP PTAir product suite and collaboration with our customers and
our customers’ customers, BP is taking an important step to improving
sustainability in the polyester industry and moving toward a lower carbon
future.”
