The National Mining Association recently
awarded Vindex Energy’s Wolf Den Run mine, an Arch Coal Inc. mine in Maryland, with its
Sentinels of Safety award for small-scale surface coal mines based on its 2015
safety performance.
The awards recognize the country’s safest
mines and are determined across 10 categories based on the mine's operating hours and
incidences of lost-time injuries. Last year saw Wolf Den Run employees logged 27,552 work hours while maintaining a lost-time incident rate of zero, the
third consecutive year that the mine had achieved that record. The mine had one
recordable incident on record, which occurred in December 2012.
“Commitment to safety and environmental
protection make up the strong foundation of our operating philosophy,” Arch
CEO John Eaves said. “We drive that message home to our employees every day
through a number of initiatives, and awards such as this one recognize their
dedicated efforts. We congratulate each Wolf Den employee for achieving this
national recognition, and we applaud their strong commitment to safe and
responsible mining practices.”
The Sentinels of Safety awards were
launched in 1925 by Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover and are the country’s
most prestigious safety awards for coal, metal and non-metal mines.
