The American Coal Council recently congratulated Donald Trump on
his victory in the presidential election and said it looked forward to working with his incoming administration based on his promises to
revive the competitiveness of coal.
The council highlighted America’s coal
resources, which are larger than any other country’s, and
praised Trump’s views on domestic energy. Additionally, the council recognized
Trump’s campaign rhetoric related to reducing bureaucracy and regulations and
increasing efforts to retain and grow U.S. industrial and manufacturing jobs.
The council highlighted the importance of
protecting investments in coal energy generation in light of numerous permanent
plant closures, which it attributed to loss of coal demand.
“The coal sector has been devastated by
lower demand and job loss in recent years due to the mounting impact of
regulations pointed squarely at our industry,” American Coal Council CEO
Betsy Monseu said. “These regulations have significantly increased the cost of coal
for electricity generation and industrial use, made it less competitive against
other fuels and resulted in the closure of a large number of coal plants.
Rather than offer environmental benefits, regulatory streamlining and business
planning certainty, regulations have become about costs, administrative
burdens and lost jobs.”
