The American Gas Association (AGA) recently
launched a Utilities United Against Scams campaign and designated
the third Wednesday of November as the annual Utilities United Against Scams
Day.
“Our core value and top priority is, and
always will be, safety,” AGA President and CEO Dave McCurdy said. “The
protection of our customers is our obligation and shared responsibility. AGA
and its member companies are committed to promoting awareness of the
increasingly sophisticated and complex nature of utility scams across the
nation, ultimately helping to protect customers from this fraudulent activity.”
According to the AGA, there are a growing
number of scams where criminals approach utilities customers via telephone,
mail, email and personally coming to their doors to demand immediate payment or
personal information.
The campaign, launched in cooperation with utilities
and trade associations across the country, will work to promote awareness
among customers and, therefore, prevent scam incidents. The AGA and its
member companies will also continue their efforts to cooperate with law
enforcement throughout the country to combat these scams, as well as
coordination with industry stakeholders and national and local political
leaders.
