Cloud Peak Energy, based in Wyoming, recently achieved independent certification through the CORESafety system,
a National Mining Association initiative aimed at improving mine health and safety and promoting a risk-based management system built on strong leadership, management and assurance, NMA said in a recent news release.
“Safety is a core value at Cloud Peak Energy and we are proud of our strong safety performance” Cloud Peak Energy President and CEO Colin Marshall said. “Cloud Peak Energy’s health, safety and environmental management system has been certified to OHSAS 18001 since 2008. CORESafety serves as another valuable resource to help us ensure the safety and health of every employee, contractor and visitor at Cloud Peak Energy.”
Companies taking part in the
CORESafety initiative system agree to to implement the system, submit to annual assessments and complete a third-party assessment, among other requirements. The CORESafety framework sets objectives for companies including reducing mining injury rates by 50 percent within five years.
“As one of the first companies to reach this significant safety milestone, we applaud Cloud Peak Energy on this achievement,” NMA President Hal Quinn said. “It shows a sincere dedication to improving safety for the benefit of its people. Since introducing the CORESafety system in 2011, fatalities among participating companies have dropped 47 percent.”
