Senior Defense Department officials, in conjunction with their Russian counterparts, discussed flight safety, flight situations, and air space regulations and rules for Syria via a videoconference from Washington, D.C.
“This was the latest session of the department’s dialogue with the Russian Ministry of Defense under the memorandum of understanding for the safety of flight in Syria to ensure that each side continues to adhere to agreed-upon measures to mitigate incidents in the air over Syria," Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, a U.S. Defense Department spokesman, said.
Prior to this meeting, there have been several exchanges regarding the specific air space used by the two countries.
“The two sides reiterated the utility of adhering to the memorandum of understanding to avoid accidents and misunderstandings in the air space over Syria,” Davis said.
Present at the meeting were Ken Handelman, co-chair acting as assistant secretary; Navy Rear Adm. Michael Dumont; and Joint Staff J5.
