The American Petroleum Institute’s Global Industry Services department (API Global) recently issued two new safety standards for the oil and natural gas sectors.
The new standards cover repair, remanufacturing and life cycle management of products and equipment.
Created according to API’s development procedure, which is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the updated standards are officially classified as API Standard 16AR - Standard for Repair and Remanufacture of Drill-through Equipment; and API Standard 18LCM - Product Life Cycle Management System Requirements for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries.
The first, 16AR, refers to testing, inspection, welding, marking, certification, handling, storage and shipping for repaired and/or remanufactured apparatus. The second, 18CLM, pinpoints regulations to which industry service providers of life cycle management can expect to adhere.
“These standards enhance the safety of industry operations, assure quality, and help drive standardization,” David Miller, API’s director of standards development, said in an announcement. “These first edition standards continue API’s long-standing tradition of building industry-driven consensus standards through our ANSI-accredited process.”
API initially published its standards in 1924. Today, it manages over 650 standards and technical publications. API regularly participates in third-party audits to guarantee that its operations meet ANSI requirements, according to the announcement.
