Companies tied to DIY Network series settle with EPA over lead-paint exposure violations

Three companies associated with the DIY Network’s “Raise the Roof” television series hosted by Keith Nylund have agreed to pay a $30,000 penalty as part of a settlement related to lead paint exposure in the Denver area, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in a recent release.

Three of Nylund’s affiliated contracting companies, KGN Asset Management LLC, KGN Asset Management Inc. and Restoration Realty Inc., allegedly violated safety measures between 2014 and 2016 regarding lead paint exposure during a popular form of home renovation known colloquially as a “pop top,” the rEPA said. This style of renovation typically involves removing the roof to add an extra story to an existing residence.

The EPA said it recently negotiated a settlement with the firms for seven violations. Subsequently, KGN Asset Management applied for and achieved lead-safe certification. Going forward, the EPA plans continuing scrutiny of job sites in the greater Denver area for compliance.

Lead paint, banned since 1978, still exists in many buildings, a number the EPA estimates to be over 30 million. Exposure to lead can lead to problems, especially vulnerable populations such as babies, children and pregnant women
