National Electrical Manufacturers Association updates standards for portable traffic signals

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published its new standards for portable traffic signal systems used to aid safe traffic flow in work zones.

The NEMA TS 5-2017 Portable Traffic Signal Systems (PTSS) Standard conveys new benchmarks for use of equipment during both routine and unexpected events, including single-lane street closures, planned closures, and emergency situations, NEMA said in a release.

"NEMA TS 5 provides the traffic control industry with a much-needed standard for portable traffic signals, which differ significantly from permanent traffic signal installations, and accurately reflects the latest technologies being used in the industry," Scott Heydt, chairman of NEMA's 03TS portable traffic signal technical committee, said in the release.

Heydt also serves as a marketing director for Horizon Signal Technologies Inc., a nationwide firm specializing in PTSS.

The new standard, TS 5-2017, is available for $138 in print or as an electronic download on the NEMA website.
