API applauds House bill to 'modernize' workforce

American Petroleum Institute (API) recently applauded a House of Representatives bill that it says the energy and manufacturing industries could benefit significantly.

The House recently approved legislation that would have a direct bearing on promoting a “21st century” pool of skilled, well-compensated workers, according to the press release.

Marty Durbin, API’s executive vice president and chief strategy office, said a critical a well-trained workforce is to maintaining the nation’s energy industry status and that by 2035, up to 1 million energy jobs could be filled by minorities — African-Americans, hispanics and women — with wages higher than the national average.

“This important bill promotes the education and workforce training needed to ensure that underrepresented communities can secure a growing number of new opportunities in the energy sector,” Durbin said. “We applaud the House’s action today and urge the Senate to promptly send this bill to the president for approval.”

The bill, H.R. 338, was sponsored by Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Illinois), who first introduced the measure in January.
