The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it recently awarded 26 local-level law enforcement and civic groups with $10 million in funding through its Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) grant program to curtail stateside terrorism activity.
DHS said in a release it supports local efforts to identify and quash terrorist recruitment and radicalization in the U.S.
“We are witnessing a global surge in terrorist activity, and in many ways our own backyard has become the battleground,” DHS Secretary John Kelly said in the release. “That is why DHS is focused on stepping up efforts to counter terrorist recruitment and radicalization, including through close collaboration with state and local partners.”
Kelly said in the release he implemented a policy review shortly after coming to DHS to channel taxpayer dollars to such programs, with the aim to render efforts as self-sustaining. The CVE grant program began in late 2015.
