EPA grants $91,000 for San Diego conservation program

A San Diego-area project recently won an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant to develop and implement a water use and conservation curriculum and raise student awareness and stewardship by blending learning, training and local hands-on workshops at a nearby property.

The official beneficiary of the $91,000 grant, Groundwork San Diego - Chollas Creek, will permit 560 or more students, two dozen instructors and 50 community members to explore the natural environment to spur scientific exploration and leadership while participating in “EarthLab Academy: Protecting Water Resources and Enhancing Environmental Literacy,” according to a press release.

Executive Director Leslie Reynolds said the group is pleased to team up with the EPA for the benefit of raising environmental awareness in low-income areas.

“The project will be delivered at the EarthLab Climate Action Center, and will work with students and families to address environmental issues in communities that suffer from the highest water and air pollution and public health challenges in the region,” Reynolds said.

Alexis Strauss, EPA’s acting regional administrator for the Pacific Southwest, commended the project for its capacity to prepare future stakeholders.

“Through projects like these, Groundwork is helping provide the next generation of leaders with the tools to tackle environmental issues.” Strauss said in the release. “Conserving water and other resources is critical to the San Diego region, and EPA is pleased to support an effort benefiting the broader community.”
