National Defense University has new president

In a ceremony marking the change of leadership, National Defense University (NDU) recently welcomed Vice Adm. Frederick Roegge as its 16th president in Washington, D.C., taking over the reins from Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Frederick Padilla.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presided at the event and thanked Padilla for his service, noting his contributions to the university’s financial and structural well-being, a Defense Department release said. Dunford also spoke highly of Roegge’s background in science and liberal arts as beneficial to the organization.

“Today’s strategic environment is more complex and volatile than any time since World War II,” Dunford said, according to the release. “Navigating today’s environment while preparing for an uncertain tomorrow (requires) not only technical experts but individuals who can think broadly, critically and creatively. That’s what NDU is all about: serving as a catalyst for strategic thought and developing strategic leaders.”

Addressing faculty and staff, Dunford added, “What you do here every day is really what gives us a true competitive advantage,” the release said.

National Defense University educates and develops security leadership in the United States. The institution houses the National War College; the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy; the College of International Security Affairs, and the Joint Forces Staff College.
