Saab lands Army contract for anti-armor weapon system

The U.S. Army placed an order with Saab for a pre-loaded, portable and disposable anti-armor weapon weighing less than 18 pounds and capable of reaching targets approximately one-fifth of a mile.

Saab, a global military defense and security solutions provider, said in a release the shoulder-launched AT4CS RS (Confined Space Reduced Sensitivity) anti-armor weapon system will be produced under terms of a $13.4 million contract, with delivery slated for 2019.

“This order is a great milestone for us and our ground combat portfolio,” Gorgen Johansson, Saab’s business area dynamics leader, said in the release. “It demonstrates continued trust from the customer and emphasizes our leadership in the shoulder-launched product market.”

The relatively easy to handle AT4 series does not require expert marksmanship skills in order to succeed, the release said. The system can be used to protect, fixed installations, supply bases and other assets in the field as well as being used against tanks and other heavy military equipment.

Saab North America President and CEO Michael Andersson said in the release that Saab has delivered over 600,000 AT4 units to the U.S. military over the last 30 years. “We are pleased to continue supplying this system and continue adapting it as the U.S. customer’s needs change,” Andersson said.
