After what U.S. Rep. Bill Shuster (R-PA) described as a prolonged process, the Conference Report to H.R. 2810 — the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 — recently passed by a 356-70 vote in the House of Representatives.

“This bill is the result of a lengthy, bipartisan process to ensure the United States military’s needs are properly met,” said Shuster, a senior member of the House Armed Service Committee.

The measure allots almost $700 billion to the Department of Defense, plus a pay raise of 2.4 percent for active military personnel; Shuster categorized the legislation as appropriate to the needs of the military.

“The final NDAA is a strong bill which supports our troops and their families, rebuilds our military, and benefits Letterkenny Army Depot,” the congressman said. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done as a committee and a Congress to restore and strengthen the national defense.”

Also included in the package destined for President Donald Trump’s approval was Shuster’s Patriot Inventory Protection Act (PIPA). Shuster’s office conveyed that PIPA could help sustain the Letterkenny base in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania as well as guard against missile shortage.

The successfully enacted conference report also prevents the closure of several outposts by encompassing a prohibition against Base Realignment and Closures.

The bill will now go to the Senate.
