A first-time consortium of natural gas and oil providers recently pledged to collaborate on improving nationwide environmental performance, beginning with reduction of methane and volatile organic compound emissions, industry leaders announced from Washington, D.C.

Calling the historic coalition a “groundbreaking partnership,” American Petroleum Institute President and CEO Jack Gerard commended participants’ dedication to advance energy resources reliably. Known as the Environmental Partnership, the alliance comprises 26 energy producers.

“U.S. methane emissions have fallen over the past decade as domestic natural gas and oil production has increased significantly due to the industry’s technology innovation and efforts to increase efficiencies,” Gerard said. “The Environmental Partnership seeks to accelerate emissions reductions and we’re headed in the right direction.”

Private sector spokespersons concurred with Gerard, affirming their companies’ commitment to environmental responsibility. The partnership spearheads three specific environmental performance programs which participants will initiate on Jan. 1: one for natural gas and oil production leak sources; a second to replace, remove or retrofit high-bleed pneumatic controllers; and finally a program for manual liquids unloading for natural gas production sources.

“In establishing the Environmental Partnership, the natural gas and oil industry is working together to promote the most effective programs and opportunities to improve environmental performance throughout our operations,” Gerard said.
